The Battle of Sector 001
In 2373 a second Borg incursion into Federation space was met by a much stronger Federation fleet at the Typhon Sector. The Borg Cube, however, did not stop to engage the fleet and after an initial exchange of fire that left heavy damage on both sides, a lengthy running battle ensued all the way to Sector 001 until the Borg Cube was well within sight of Earth. There, Starfleet prepared its last line of defence. The remnants of the Typhon fleet, reinforced by Earth's defences and all Federation ships in the area able to fight, made one final push against the Borg onslaught, utilising every lesson learned from the massacre at Wolf 359 in a desperate struggle to halt the Cube's advance. Every new weapon was brought to bear and every new tactic employed. Their success was impressive. Though nearing complete exhaustion and suffering great losses, Starfleet managed to inflict heavy damage to the structure of the Borg Cube. It was, however, to no avail. With estimates indicating that a Bog Cube could continue operating efficiently even if up to 78% of the entire vessel was disabled, Starfleet's efforts simply weren't enough and the Borg continued their assault. It was only through the timely arrival of the USS Enterprise-E and the knowledge of the Borg retained by Captain Jean-Luc Picard that hope was finally rekindled. Hearing echoes of the Borg's collective consciousness in his mind, Picard was able to determine that the Borg were directing the bulk of their repair efforts to a specific section of the Cube. They were vulnerable. Taking command of the fleet, Picard ordered the fleet to focus its fire on that section of the Cube. After several volleys the Borg suffered catastrophic damage, leading to the Cube's complete destruction. Victory was theirs and Earth was safe. The fleet's captains, however, were surprised when the Enterprise, instead of regrouping, headed rapidly towards Earth, only to return moments later along with a surge of odd chronometric readings...
